 Vioxx
is the brand name for the generic name rofecoxib. It is classified
as a member of the new generation of pain-fighting medications
known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDs. Vioxx
is one of the pain relievers for rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis,
chronic pain and menstrual discomfort. (NSAIDs). Vioxx works
by reducing substances that cause inflammation, pain, and fever
in the body. Vioxx may also be used for purposes other than

A clinical trial called the Vioxx Gastrointestinal Outcomes Research
(VIGOR) study examined 4,000 patients on Vioxx (50 mg a day.) And
another 4,000 patients on (1000 mg a day) of naproxen compared to
another non-steroid anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). The VIGOR proved
that 50% of the patients who were prescribed Vioxx to alleviate
pain, experienced less adverse affects in the digestive system compared
to the prescribed medications. As a result the FDA has allowed the
drug's manufacturer to market the drug as being safer for the stomach
than traditional anti-inflammatory drugs. Vioxx is the first of
its kind to get this approval.
Take each dose with a full glass of water.
Before measuring a dose, shake the Vioxx suspension well.
In order to ensure the correct amount of medicine, use a dose-measuring
cup or spoon and not a regular table spoon.
Can be taken with or without food or milk.
Store Vioxx at room temperature away from moisture and heat.
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember.
If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the dose you missed
and take only the next regularly scheduled dose as directed.

Do not take Vioxx without first talking to your doctor if you have
experienced asthma, hives, or an allergic reaction after taking
aspirin or another NSAID such as ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil, Nuprin),
naproxen (Aleve, Naprosyn, Anaprox), ketoprofen (Orudis KT, Orudis,
Oruvail), diclofenac (Voltaren, Cataflam), diflunisal (Dolobid),
etodolac (Lodine), fenoprofen (Nalfon), flurbiprofen (Ansaid), indomethacin
(Indocin), ketorolac (Toradol), nabumetone (Relafen), oxaprozin
(Daypro), piroxicam (Feldene), sulindac (Clinoril), tolmetin (Tolectin),
celecoxib (Celebrex), valdecoxib (Bextra), or meloxicam (Mobic).
You may experience a similar reaction to rofecoxib.
If you experience any of the following serious side effects, stop
taking Vioxx and seek medical treatment or contact your doctor immediately
an allergic reaction, abdominal pain, tenderness, or discomfort;
bloody, black/tarry stools; nausea, blood in your vomit, swelling
or water retention, unusual fatigue or lethargy, or unusual bruising
or bleeding.
