Used for the relief of moderate to severe pain, Tramadol
works by affecting chemicals and receptors in the body
that are associated with pain. |
|
Take Tramadol as prescribed and according to your doctor’s instructions.
The prescription should be taken by mouth every 4 to 6 hours as needed.
It is not recommended to increase the dose, use it more frequently
or use for a longer period-of-time than prescribed. Tramadol can be
as prescribed and according to your doctor’s specifications
habit-forming and addicting. Also, if Tramadol is used for an extended
period of time, do not suddenly stop using it without your doctor’s
approval. When used for an extended time, it may not work as well
and may require different dosing. Notify your doctor if Tramadol stops
working well.
The adverse reactions associated with Tramadol potentially include
weakness, incoordination, drowsiness, dizziness, anxiety, irritability,
dry mouth, nausea or vomiting, stomach upset, constipation, headache,
or increased sweating. If any of the side effects worsen, notify your
doctor. Contact your doctor if any of the following serious effects
occur while taking Tramadol: chest pain, rapid heart rate, skin rash
or itching, mental confusion, disorientation, seizures, tingling of
the hands or feet, trouble breathing. In the unlikely event you have
an allergic reaction to Tramadol, seek immediate medical attention.
The symptoms of an allergic reaction include the following conditions:
rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, breathing trouble. If you notice
other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
Notify your doctor of your medical history. Remember it include
information regarding kidney disease, liver disease, seizure disorder,
lung disease, history of drug or alcohol dependency, any allergies
you may have. Minimize alcohol consumption as it may add to the
dizziness or drowsiness effects caused by Tramadol. Because Tramadol
may make you dizzy/drowsy, use caution performing tasks requiring
alertness such as driving. Tramadol should be used only when clearly
needed during pregnancy. Confer the risks and benefits with your
doctor. Tramadol is excreted into breast milk. Because the effects
on a nursing infant are not known, Notify your doctor before breast-
feeding.
Report to your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription medications
that you are taking. Carbamazepine, narcotic pain relievers (e.g.,
codeine), drugs used to aid sleep, antidepressants (e.g., SSRI-types
such as fluoxetine or fluvoxamine), MAO inhibitors (e.g., furazolidone,
linezolid, phenelzine, procarbazine, selegiline, tranylcypromine),
psychiatric medicine (e.g., nefazodone), “triptan”-type
drugs, anti-anxiety drugs (e.g., diazepam), sibutramine are important
prescriptions that you should confer with your doctor. Report any
use of certain antihistamines (e.g., diphenhydramine) which are
also present in many cough-and-cold products. Do not start or stop
any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval.
The information contained in this overview is not intended to replace
the instructions advised by your doctor or pharmacist. Notify your
medical provider before using Tramadol.
If a Tramadol overdose is suspected, contact your local emergency
room immediately. The adverse events of overdosing include body
temperature, slowed breathing, cold and clammy skin, low slowed
heartbeat, drowsiness, dizziness, lightheadedness, deep sleep, loss
of consciousness, or seizures.
Never share Tramadol with others who it is not prescribed.
Take Tramadol as soon as remembered if you miss a dose. Never take
Tramadol if it is near the time for the next scheduled dose. Skip
the missed dose and resume the usual dosing schedule. Never double
up on doses to catch up.
Store Tramadol at room temperature away from heat and light. Do not
store in the bathroom because of dampness. Keep Tramadol out of the
reach of children. |
