Sarafem is the brand name for Fluoxetine, the generic name. It is in a class of drugs called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Sarafem affects chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced and cause depression or mood disturbances, eating disorders, or obsessive or compulsive symptoms. Used to treat depression, obsessive-compulsive disorders, panic disorder, and bulimia (binge eating and purging), Sarafem is also used to treat premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD), symptoms of which occur in the week or two before a woman's menstrual period and commonly include irritability, mood swings, and tension as well as the physical symptoms of bloating and breast tenderness.

Always use Sarafem precisely as directed by your physician. If you do not understand these instructions, ask your pharmacist, nurse, or doctor to explain them to you. Take Sarafem weekly on the same day each week as directed by your doctor.

The adverse effects associated with the use of Sarafem include the following medical conditions: headache, tremor, nervousness, difficulty concentrating, nausea, diarrhea, dry mouth, or changes in appetite or weight, weakness, increased sweating, sleepiness or insomnia, or decreased sex drive, impotence, or difficulty having an orgasm. Consult your physician if you develop an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing, closing of the throat, swelling of the lips, tongue, or face, or hives, an irregular heartbeat or pulse, low blood pressure, high blood pressure

Prior to using Sarafem, notify your doctor if you have kidney disease, diabetes, seizures or suicidal thoughts. If you have taken a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), or tranylcypromine (Parnate) during the last 2 weeks. Serious, and sometimes fatal, reactions have occurred when these medicines have been used together. Caution is advised when Sarafem is used in the elderly. During pregnancy or breast-feeding, women should not use the medication without their physician’s approval.

Notify your physician of all prescription and nonprescription medications that you are using. If you are taking the any of the following: a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) such as isocarboxazid (Marplan), phenelzine (Nardil), or tranylcypromine (Parnate) during the last 2 weeks. Serious, and sometimes fatal, reactions have occurred when these medicines have been used together. Also, do not take Sarafem if you are taking thioridazine (Mellaril). Dangerous, even fatal irregular heartbeats may occur if these medicines are taken together. You must wait 5 weeks after stopping Sarafem before taking thioridazine (Mellaril).

If overdose is suspected, contact your urgency care center promptly. The symptoms of Sarafem overdose may include nausea, vomiting, tremor, agitation, seizures, drowsiness, hyperactivity, and enlarged pupils. Your physician may monitor liver tests during treatment. Do not share Sarafem with others whom it is not diagnosed.

If you miss a dose, take it when you realize it. If it’s almost time for the next dose, skip the missed dose. Do not take a double dose to catch up.

Store Sarafem at room temperature away from light, heat and moisture. Keep out of reach of children and throw away any unused drug after the expiration date.
