Prozac Recommended for Prozac works by helping to restore the balance of certain natural chemicals in the brain. It is Used to treat various mental imbalances, Prozac is the prescription taken for depression, bulimia (an eating disorder), obsessive-compulsive disorders (OCD), and severe symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (premenstrual dysphoric disorder-PMDD). Prozac has also been used to treat panic attacks, obesity, and alcoholism.

Take Prozac exactly as prescribed by your physician and pharmacist. Prozac is usually taken by mouth once daily in the morning, with or without food. The dosage requirement is based on your medical condition and response to therapy. Certain medical conditions require a different dosing schedule (in example, twice daily in the morning and at noon) or as instructed by your physician. Even if you feel better, it is important to continue taking Prozac this medication even if you feel well. Also, do not stop taking this medication without consulting your doctor. It may take up to four weeks before the full benefit of Prozac takes effect.

Talk to your physician or pharmacist about safe use of Prozac. Remember to provide a complete medical history; specifically of: liver problems, kidney disease, seizures, heart problems, diabetes, any allergies. Prozac can potentially cause dizziness or drowsiness. Use caution when engaging in activities that require alertness such as driving or using machinery. Limit alcoholic beverage consumption. Additionally, caution is advised if you are elderly, diabetic, an alcoholic or have liver disease. (You may be more sensitive to the effects of Prozac.) If you are pregnant or breast-feeding, discuss the risks and benefits of Prozac with your doctor.

The adverse effects associated with the use of Prozac are nausea, headache, trouble sleeping, dry mouth, drowsiness, sweating, or upset stomach. If any of the symptoms persist, notify your physician, promptly. Immediately, notify your doctor if any of the following adverse events occur: loss of appetite, unusual weight loss, unusual or severe mental/mood changes, uncontrolled movements (tremor), decreased interest in sex, or flu-like symptoms. If the unlikely but serious side effects occur: vision changes, trouble swallowing, fainting, irregular/fast heartbeat, swelling or white spots on the mouth and/or tongue, changes in sexual ability, painful and/or a prolonged erection tell your doctor. Also report any allergic reaction symptoms like: rash, itching, swelling, dizziness, trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Because the potential interactions with the following medication, consult your physician if you are taking any of the following: MAO inhibitors (e.g., furazolidone, isocarboxazid, linezolid, moclobemide, phenelzine, procarbazine, selegiline, tranylcypromine) within 2 weeks, and avoid taking thioridazine within 5 weeks, before or after treatment with Prozac. Prozac is not recommended for use with: weight loss medicine (e.g., sibutramine, phentermine), thioridazine, terfenadine, astemizole. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for more details. Tell your physician of all prescription and nonprescription medication you may use, especially: other SSRI antidepressants (e.g., citalopram, sertraline), nefazodone, trazodone, venlafaxine, "triptan" migraine drugs (e.g., sumatriptan, zolmitriptan), tramadol, tricyclic antidepressants (e.g., amitriptyline, nortriptyline), flecainide, propafenone, haloperidol, clozapine, lithium, tryptophan, "blood thinners" (e.g., warfarin), anti-seizure drugs (e.g., carbamazepine, phenytoin/hydantoins), herbal/natural products (e.g., St John's wort, ayahuasca). Notify your doctor if you take any drugs that cause drowsiness such as: medicine for sleep, tranquilizers, anti-anxiety drugs (e.g., alprazolam), narcotic pain relievers (e.g., codeine), muscle relaxants, psychiatric medicine (e.g., phenothiazines such as chlorpromazine), certain antihistamines (e.g., diphenhydramine). Check the labels on all your medicines (e.g., cough-and-cold products) because they may contain drowsiness-causing ingredients. Ask your pharmacist about the safe use of these products. Report any other drugs which affect the heart rhythm such as: dofetilide, pimozide, sotalol, quinidine, procainamide, sparfloxacin, "water pills" (diuretics such as furosemide or hydrochlorothiazide). Consult your physician about all of the prescribed and non-prescribed medication that you are taking. Never start or stop any medicine without the approval of your doctor or pharmacist.

If a Prozac overdose is suspected, contact your local emergency room immediately. The symptoms of overdose include the following: irregular heartbeat, fainting, severe dizziness or lightheadedness. Never Prozac with others who it is not prescribed.

Always take the missed Prozac dose as soon as remembered. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and take only your next regularly scheduled dose. Never take a double dose of Prozac.

Store Prozac at room temperature, away from moisture heat and light. Keep out of reach of children.
