An oral antiviral medication, Famvir (famciclovir) is
used for the treatment of recurrent genital herpes, suppression
of recurrent genital herpes, and treatment of recurrent
herpes simplex virus infections (genital herpes and cold
sores) in HIV-infected patients.

|
Always used Famvir as prescribed by your doctor. If symptoms start
to improve before use the entire prescribed dosage. Famvir can be
used with our without food. Herpes outbreaks and infections are contagious.
Other people can be infected if they are in contact. To prevent transmission,
wash hands frequently. After the initial outbreak of herpes, Famvir
can be prescribed in 1 of 3 ways:
For episodic and suppressive treatment, use Famvir as prescribed
by your physician. If you are taking any other prescription or over-the-counter
medications, please be sure to tell your physician. No medication
has been proven to prevent the transmission of genital herpes. It's
important to know that Famvir will not prevent the spread of genital
herpes to others. During an outbreak, you must avoid sexual contact,
and use a condom in between outbreaks.
During episodic treatments, your doctor will treat an outbreak of
genital herpes as it occurs. The usual dose of Famvir is one 125-mg
pill, twice a day, for 5 days.†
Suppressive treatment is if you have persistent or severe outbreaks,
you take one 250-mg pill, twice a day, for up to 1 year to suppress
the genital herpes virus and help to prevent outbreaks.
For patients with HIV – Famvir is the only prescription oral
antiviral therapy indicated for treating genital or orolabial herpes
in people infected with HIV. In patients with herpes simplex and
HIV, the dose of Famvir is 500 mg, twice a day, for 7 days.
Famvir should not be taken by patients with known hypersensitivity
to the product, its components, and Denavir (penciclovir cream).
Famvir does not have any clinically significant interactions with
cimetidine, allopurinol, theophylline, digoxin, or zidovudine (AZT).
Famvir does not contain any dyes.
If a Famvir overdose is suspected, contact your urgency care center
promptly. The symptoms of Famvir overdose may include trouble breathing
or unconsciousness. Your physician may monitor liver tests during
treatment. Do not share Famvir with others.
When you miss a dose of Famvir, take it as soon as you remember.
If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose. Then
resume your usual dosing schedule. Never"double-up" the
dose to catch up.
