Aldara is used for the treatment of external genital and perianal
warts. A topical treatment, Aldara works for external genital and
perianal warts that are caused by a virus called Human Papilloma
Virus. The wart-like growths are called condyloma acuminata. It
has not shown any evidence of its own antiviral activity. Additionally,
Aldara is an immune response modifier. It stimulates the body's
own immune response system and helps the body fight the virus. Aldara
achieves this by inducing cytokines like alpha-interferon. Alpha-interferon,
a complex compound is normally produced by the human body and has
a potent antiviral activity.
Prior to using Aldara cream, always wash hands. It should be applied
just before bedtime.
- Apply a thin layer of cream on the wart(s).
- Rub Aldara in until it vanishes.
- Throw-away the open packet and wash hands.
- Let Aldara soak into the wart(s) for 6 to 10 hours.
- After 6 to 10 hours, wash the area where Aldara cream was
applied with mild soap and water.
Usually, Aldara doses should be administered once daily for 3 days
a week—every other day. (In example: Monday, Wednesday, and
Friday, or Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.)
Apply Aldara cream at bedtime, after bathing, so you do not wash
off the cream. Aldara treatment should continue until the warts
are completely gone, or up to 16 weeks.
Avoid all sexual contact when Aldara is on the skin. If intimacy occurs,
apply Aldara after and not prior to sexual activity. If Aldara cream
is already applied, it should be washed. Essentially, Aldara cream
may weaken condoms and diaphragms; therefore, the cream should not
be left on during intimacy.
Aldara cream does not destroy healthy skin. Typically, people who
use Aldara cream very rarely experience any discomfort or any pain.
The most common adverse effect is redness. This may be an indication
that your immune system is working. The other common side effects
are peeling of the skin, itching, flaking, and swelling around the
warts.
Within 10 weeks, 50% of the patients in clinical trials were completely
clear of warts. Within 4 weeks, Aldara cream can efficiently clear
genital warts. Ten weeks is the average healing time, it may take
as long as 16 weeks. Results vary from person to person.
New warts may form during treatment because Aldara doesn't cure Human
Papilloma Virus, the cause of genital and perianal warts.
Because Aldara cream can potentially weaken condoms and diaphragms,
sexual contact should be avoided while the cream is applied to the
skin. There is not any information about the events of Aldara cream
spreading genital warts to a partner.
Any female patients who become pregnant while using Aldara cream should
consult their medical provider immediately. Never use Aldara to treat
internal (inside the vagina or anus) warts. Skin discolorations have
been reported. Do not cover warts with bandages or other closed dressings.
Avoid using overly large amounts of cream. A thin layer that completely
covers a wart is adequate.
Never use Aldara beyond the expiration date. Store Aldara at room
temperature out of the reach of children.
